“The hospital is an area that everyone needs, and as a corporation in this community, Weber wants to give back.” – Chris Edwards

Chris was born and raised in this community; he attended St. Theresa’s High School and is now the President at Weber Manufacturing Technologies Inc.  Growing up in Tay Township, Chris was familiar with the hospital, but it wasn’t until a couple years ago that he got the opportunity for an inside look.

In March 2013, Chris attended the “Breakfast of Champions”, hosted by the Foundation at Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH).  It was here he first learned that hospital equipment and capital expenditures are not supported by our government. While government funding does pay for the operational costs of health care, such as salaries, medication and hydro, the crucial equipment used for our best care, like beds, monitors, x-ray machines and stretchers, is not.  The funds for these essential tools come from generous donations from our community.

“To this day I find it hard to believe that government funding does not fully support the hospital,” says Chris. “It’s a strange thought to think that they [the government] would say, here’s a hospital, we can build it, but everything else that allows a hospital to function is not supported.”

The Breakfast of Champions is an opportunity for members of the community to see the hospital on a private tour, ask questions of CEO Karen McGrath and enjoy a hot breakfast. After attending, Chris walked away knowing what the needs are at GBGH. There was no question about what he felt he needed to do to support the community’s health care system.

“It [Breakfast of Champions] opened my eyes to what the hospital needed,” Chris says.

Following his attendance at the Breakfast of Champions, Chris committed to a donation of $10,000 from Weber Manufacturing (over three years), but successfully fulfilled that commitment within the first year. And, Weber Manufacturing hasn’t stopped there!  Not only has Weber Manufacturing committed an additional $10,000 in 2015, but in October 2014, for the GBGH annual Gala, Weber donated a high-end door system, in partnership with Templeton Windows and Strassburger Windows and Doors. The door was auctioned off at the event, with Midland Mayor Gord McKay as the lucky winner of the item, which raised an amazing $5,000 for the Foundation.

We want to say THANK YOU to Chris Edwards and Weber Manufacturing Technologies Inc. for the generous donations they have made and continue to give to the GBGH Foundation.
