MIDLAND, ON, October 30, 2015 — In response to a critical need for a new CT Scanner at the Georgian Bay General Hospital, Economical Insurance, one of Canada’s largest providers of home, auto and commercial insurance, today presented the hospital’s foundation with $12,000. The donation was made in association with Midland broker partner, BrokerLink. The hospital’s current CT Scanner, acquired eight years ago, has reached the end of its lifespan and is beginning to malfunction and break down.

“The CT Scanner is the workhorse of your Imaging Department,” said Karen McGrath, president & chief executive officer of GBGH. “It is used up to 700 times a month for vital diagnosis and treatment. Without a new one, our patients will soon be forced to travel great distances for these essential services.”

“We are so grateful to Economical Insurance for stepping up to the plate with this significant donation,” said Carey Moran, president of the GBGH Foundation. “To put it bluntly, without a new CT Scanner, lives will be at risk. Because our hospital’s capital equipment is not funded by the province, we depend on the generosity of donors to raise the money to buy the new CT Scanner.”

The CT Scanner is critical to the Emergency Department for quickly identifying injuries that require immediate treatment. It is the primary tool for diagnosing patients with severe headaches, chest pain, abdominal pain and uncontrolled bleeding. It is also used to scan the heart and coronary arteries to quickly diagnose strokes and to assess the heart muscle after a heart attack. CT technology is also used to diagnose, plan treatment, and follow up virtually all cancers.

“It’s great that Economical is giving back to our community in such a big way,” said Peter Mount, branch manager of BrokerLink in Midland. “As a resident of the area, I know what an important role the hospital plays in the lives of those who live here. A new CT Scanner will help save valuable time and countless lives. Thank you Economical for your generosity.”

“We are pleased this donation meets a definite need at GBGH and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to keeping Midland and the surrounding area a place where many people are proud to call home,” said Robert Gow, Economical’s vice-president of sales and distribution for Ontario.
