Gerard LaChapelle

Gerard LaChapelle

Gerrard LaChappelle

In 2006, Gerard’s wife, Gail lost her battle with pancreatic cancer.  For the past nine years, Gerard and his family have worked to turn their heartbreaking loss into a legacy that will continue to serve the Georgian Bay General Hospital and this community for years to come.

As a wife, mother of four and nurse, Gail instilled in her family and friends a desire for lifelong learning, commitment to a cause and the will to make things better.  As a tribute to her passion and dedication, Gerard set out to do something to encourage and support individuals like Gail who are pursuing their nursing dreams.

In December 2007, Gerard and his family presented the first Gail LaChapelle Memorial Fund award to a deserving nursing student. This special bursary honours one nursing student every year, and supports both those in school full-time and also the working moms who juggle their jobs, children and continuing nursing education.  In addition, education grants are made available each year to nursing students who are committed to furthering their nursing education.  Each year, the Gail LaChapelle Memorial Bursary & Education Fund gives $6,000 to nurses who embody the values that Gail was known for.

Further to the education funding, Gerard has also made a number of significant contributions to the new Emergency Department.  He has already contributed $50,000 for two new treatment rooms, and most recently committed to raising an additional $100,000 for the new Nursing Communication Centre that will be named in Gail’s honour.

To raise these funds, Gerard, with the help of family and friends, organizes the annual Gail LaChapelle Golf Tournament at the Midland Golf and Country Club.  Hundreds of volunteer hours have gone into this event, and it is one that the nurses and staff at GBGH look forward to taking part in every year.  To date, Gerard and the friends and family of Gail LaChapelle have raised in excess of $320,000!

Gerard is a dedicated and passionate volunteer who has generously donated his time and money to support the causes he believes in so strongly.  We want to say THANK YOU to Gerard for everything he does to support the Georgian Bay General Hospital!
