GBGH is designated as a Level 3 ICU Unit, which is one of the highest
levels of service in the province of Ontario to meet the needs of the
patients who may require advanced or ongoing respiratory/life support.
Our ICU consists of six beds and has the ability to care for a wide variety

of patients experiencing complex medical issues.

CO2 detectors play a crucial role in providing excellent care by

monitoring patients’ respiratory status to ensure their safety. These
monitors constantly measure the levels of C02 in a patient’s breath, to
quickly identify respiratory problems so the care teams can intervene
promptly and prevent any severe complications.

GBGH has a few units in the Emergency Department (ED) and
Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but with many patients requiring high levels
of monitoring, more detectors are needed. We cannot leave a patient
on a ventilator or post-trauma without this level of surveillance.
Investing in five new units (2 for ICU and 3 for our ED) will ensure that
each department has 6 detectors available at all times.
