Your Stories

When a child arrives struggling to breathe or a parent clutches their chest in pain, every second matters. Our care teams rely on the right tools — ready, reliable, and advanced — to act with confidence and compassion without hesitation.

In those critical moments, the right equipment can mean the difference between fear and reassurance, uncertainty and hope. Every piece of equipment our GBGH teams depend on is here because of incredible donors like you. Thank you for helping ensure life-saving, excellent care is always within reach.

GBGH equipment impact

Portable Lift & Ceiling Lifts
The new portable and ceiling lifts at GBGH help staff move patients securely, reducing the risk of falls and injuries while preserving comfort and dignity. They also support nurses and care teams by preventing workplace injuries, allowing them to focus on what matters most: being present with their patients.

Recumbent Stepper
Recovery isn’t always about big milestones. Often, it’s about the small first steps in the healing journey. The new recumbent stepper at GBGH provides patients with a safe, supported way to rebuild strength, mobility, and confidence at their own pace. It also gives care teams a valuable rehabilitation tool to guide recovery while reducing strain and risk of injury. Because of donor support, care at GBGH continues beyond critical moments and into healing, independence, and renewal.

9 New Stretchers
Thanks to the success of Giving Tuesday and the generosity of the Boudouris Family and an anonymous donor who helped triple the impact of gifts, nine new stretchers were purchased for GBGH! These stretchers improve comfort and safety for patients while supporting staff with better mobility and ergonomics — helping care teams respond faster and move patients with greater dignity every day.

Your generosity makes all of this possible. Every piece of equipment, every life-saving tool, and every improvement in patient care reflects the kindness and commitment of donors like you.

Through our We See You Campaign,  your support today ensures that patients at GBGH receive not just excellent care, but compassionate care — every moment, every day. Thank you for being part of this impact.

“It’s one thing to provide excellent medical care, it’s another to truly care for people. During my time at GBGH, my health care team did both with professionalism, patience, and compassion, even in the most difficult moments. They do incredible work every day, and they deserve to know how much it matters.” — Rick M., grateful patient

For Mike and Sarah Thor, community isn’t just where they live — it’s where their story is unfolding.

Long-time Midland residents, Mike and Sarah have raised their family here and built their lives around a deep commitment to the people and places that make this community strong. As founding partners of Thor Wealth Management Group, they are both Senior Portfolio Managers with TD Wealth Private Wealth Management, recognized among the top advisory teams within TD Wealth in Canada. For more than 30 years, their firm has provided holistic wealth strategies to families and individuals across the Georgian Bay, Parry Sound, and Muskoka regions.

Family is at the heart of everything they do. With three children currently attending university, time together is especially meaningful. When everyone is home, Mike can often be found in the kitchen, cooking for his family — turning simple moments into shared memories around the table.

Their connection to Georgian Bay General Hospital runs deep. Sarah was born at GBGH, and years later, that connection became profoundly personal when Mike required emergency, life‑saving surgery at the hospital. Experiencing care so close to home offered a powerful reminder of just how essential GBGH is — not only to their family, but to the entire community — and highlighted the growing need for continued investment in local healthcare.

That experience became a turning point. Motivated to give back, Mike and Sarah stepped forward to champion a fundraising effort that raised more than $90,000 for an additional surgical tower. Their leadership helped GBGH use its second operating room more efficiently, expanding access to critical surgical care for patients when it mattered most.

For more than three decades, Mike and Sarah have supported the GBGH Foundation. As Cornerstone Partners at the Diamond level, they have supported a variety of hospital initiatives, always guided by a desire to strengthen care close to home.

The We See You campaign resonated deeply as they considered the evolving needs of both the hospital and the growing community it serves. Understanding the importance of continued investment in mental health services and essential capital equipment across all departments, Mike and Sarah recently made a $125,000 pledge to support the campaign — a meaningful step toward ensuring GBGH can continue delivering excellent care when it is needed most. Just as importantly, they hope their support encourages others to recognize the hospital’s immeasurable value, and the role we all play in sustaining it.

Their belief is simple and enduring: strong community partnerships build great hospitals. Mike and Sarah know they are fortunate to live in a community that continues to care, and they are proud to help lead the way.
