The Georgian Bay General Hospital Foundation continues to reflect with gratitude on the life and legacy of Mary Harvey, a dedicated member of our Board of Directors, proud member of Beausoleil First Nation, and passionate advocate for the well-being of her community.
Mary joined the GBGH Foundation Board with a sincere desire to help strengthen local healthcare and ensure everyone had access to the care they need, close to home. During her time on the Board, she generously shared her experience, perspective, and unwavering commitment to community service. She believed deeply in the importance of a strong local hospital, particularly for future generations, and was proud to contribute to the Foundation’s mission.
Born in Midland and raised in part on Christian Island, Mary returned home to Chimnissing in 1988, where she built a life rooted in family, entrepreneurship, volunteerism, and community leadership. Throughout the years she pursued successful business ventures in hospitality, catering, restaurant management, and retail, while continually finding ways to give back. She served on the board of the Anishinabek Police Service and volunteered with Crime Stoppers of Simcoe Muskoka, reflecting her lifelong commitment to helping others.
In her obituary, Mary was remembered as a woman with a compassionate heart, a powerful voice, and an unwavering dedication to making life better for those around her. She worked tirelessly to ensure people felt heard, respected, and cared for, and those same qualities were evident in her contributions to the Foundation and the broader hospital community.
“Mary brought an invaluable perspective to our Board and never lost sight of the people behind every decision we made,” shared Joe Rooney, Chair, GBGH Foundation Board of Directors. “She cared deeply about her community, spoke with honesty and conviction, and helped us see issues through a broader lens. I had tremendous respect for her insight and the passion she brought to our discussions. Mary’s presence made our Board stronger, and she will be greatly missed.”
Those who served alongside Mary knew her as someone who cared deeply about people. Whether advocating for her community, making thank you calls, baking meat pies to donate to the hospital, or sharing stories about the grandchildren she adored, she brought authenticity, kindness, and purpose to everything she did.

We are grateful for Mary’s service, her leadership, and the lasting impact she made on our Foundation and our community. Her legacy of caring for others will continue to inspire us for years to come.
