For the month of November, bakeries in Midland, Tay and Penetanguishene are joining forces to raise funds for Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH). Café Kittyhawk, Boulangers Midland City Bakers, Royal Tea on King, Shana’s Baked Goods, Pier 21 Restaurant, World Famous Dock Lunch, The PULSE Nutrition and the Captain’s Cafe (at GBGH) will be collecting donations for Celia’s Bake Sale, an annual fundraiser organized by Penetanguishene resident, Melissa Robinson.
For the past four years, Melissa has spent the month of November baking to raise funds for GBGH to honour the memory of her daughter, Celia Marie Robinson, who passed away at GBGH on Christmas Day 2019 from an underlying genetic immunodeficiency. Since 2020, the event has raised more than $28,000.
“We will forever be grateful for the care and compassion we received from the team at GBGH,” shared Melissa. “We wanted to do something to honour Celia, and I decided the bake sale was the best way. I never thought it would take off the way it did. The community support has been amazing.”
In 2024, Celia’s Bake Sale is raising funds to purchase a vital signs monitor (or two) for the Emergency Department at GBGH. Each monitor has a cost of $5,700 and provides critical information to the care teams on a patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature. It was one of the pieces of equipment that the GBGH team used for Celia’s care.
“The response from our local bakeries has been wonderful,” says Robyn Blanchet, community giving officer, GBGH Foundation. “Melissa’s passion for the cause is compelling, and we are thrilled that a number of businesses are joining her to raise funds to honour Celia this year.”
