Guys Who Care have big impact at GBGH
Georgian Bay General Hospital (GBGH) is celebrating a $22,500 donation from Guys Who Care North Simcoe. The donation comes from nearly 90 individual members of the group, whose mission is to bring together men in North Simcoe who care about local community causes.
“What better way to give back to our community than investing in better equipment for our hospital,” says Mike Thor and Andrew Combes, organizers of Guys Who Care. “We are proud to support the GBGH Foundation in their ongoing efforts to care for local patients and their families.”
The donation will help to fund the purchase of a new portable ultrasound for the Emergency department at GBGH. This vital diagnostic tool is used at least five times every day, and allows physicians to provide fast, accurate diagnosis at the patient bedside. It can be used to diagnose gall stones, congestive heart failure, skin infections or abscesses, and internal bleeding.
“As a physician, I know access to the latest diagnostic imaging tools really does save lives,” says Dr. Dan Lee, chief of Emergency Medicine, GBGH. “Using the portable ultrasound, we are able to make diagnoses instantaneously which means treatment can begin sooner and results in better patient outcomes.”
The new portable ultrasound will cost $70,000. Ontario hospitals receive no government funding to update or buy new equipment. It is the community’s responsibility to fund all the tools and technology required for patient care.
